Part of the series: Event marketing playbook
• Next: Exhibitor playbook for booth + meetings
The biggest networking myth is that you “just see what happens” at an event.
That’s not networking. That’s wandering.
Step 1: Download the official app and actually use it
Big events build networking tools into their app. Use them to shortlist attendees, send messages, and book meetings
before everyone’s calendar turns into a crime scene.
MWC-specific tip (works elsewhere too)
The MWC app is designed to help attendees connect with participants and extend networking beyond the event window.

Step 2: Build a target list (not a “spray and pray” list)
My simple targeting filters
- Company type: customers / partners / investors / press
- Job role: decision maker vs “gathering info”
- Fit: they have a real problem you solve
- Probability: likely to meet + likely to convert
Copy/paste outreach message template
Subject: Quick meeting at [EVENT]?
Hey [Name] — I saw you’re attending [EVENT]. I’m working on [one-line value] for [audience], and I think there’s a solid overlap with what you’re doing at [Company].
Up for a quick 15 minutes on [Day] near [Hall/Area]? If easier, send me 2 time slots and I’ll fit around you.
(Bonus: I promise not to turn it into a 45-minute demo ambush.)
— Oliver
Step 3: Plan your “meeting inventory”
- Anchor meetings: your top 10
- Flex slots: 2 per day for opportunistic intros
- Recovery blocks: 15 minutes after every 2 meetings (notes + water)
